Charly Gaul was a Luxembourgian road cyclist who was born on December 8th, 1932 in the city of Pfaffenthal in the country of Luxembourg. He had a prosperous professional career from 1953 until 1965, during which time he distinguished himself as one of the most gifted climbers in the annals of cycling history. His career spanned the years 1953 until 1965. Before turning professional in 1953, Gaul began his racing career in Luxembourg as an amateur driver.

The most significant accomplishment in Gaul’s career was his victory in the Tour de France in 1958. Gaul’s ability to climb proved to be the deciding factor in the competition, as he triumphed in all three mountain stages and crossed the finish line about three minutes ahead of his nearest competitor. Gaul is the first rider from Luxembourg to win the Tour de France. He is also the second rider from a tiny country, after Gino Bartali of Italy, to win the event.

Gaul was notorious for his reclusive demeanor and his tendency for competing alone in races. In addition to this, he was renowned for having exceptional climbing ability, which enabled him to thrive in environments with steep terrain. Gaul was given the moniker “Angel of the Mountains” because to the distinctive manner in which he climbed, which was distinguished by his little stature and his ability to spin a low gear at a high cadence.

Gaul’s career was marked by a number of failures, despite the fact that he was victorious in the Tour de France. At the 1960 edition of the race, he was forced to withdraw due to bronchitis. The following year, during the 1962 edition of the Giro d’Italia, he was involved in a serious crash and sustained multiple injuries.

After Gaul retired from competitive cycling in 1965, he went on to work in the cycling industry as a commentator and as a coach. His passing took place on December 6, 2005, when he was 72 years old.
