Born on November 26, 1977 in Gallarate, Italy, Ivan Basso is an Italian former competitive road cyclist. He was a well-known climber who achieved victory in both one-day and stage competitions.
Basso went professional in 1999 and rode for a variety of teams during his career, including CSC and Liquigas. He achieved his best success in the Grand Tours, finishing in the top five in the Tour de France on four occasions and the Giro d’Italia in 2006 and 2010.
Basso was well-known for his consistency and ability to perform well under adverse conditions. In addition to being a formidable time trialist, he won numerous mountain stages in Grand Tours. Yet, controversy characterized his career as well. He was barred from racing for two years in 2007 after being implicated in the Operación Puerto doping scandal.
Despite the setback, Basso returned to racing in 2009 and resumed his career, winning the Giro d’Italia for a second time in 2010. 2018 marked his retirement from professional cycling, however he stays connected in the sport as a team management.
Basso is noted for his calm and restrained demeanor away from the bike. In addition to being a cancer survivor, he has been actively involved in promoting awareness for cancer research and treatment.
