Paolo Bettini was born on April 1, 1974.

The Italian rider was one of the most prolific one-day specialists in Italian cycling.

Bettini won the 2006 World Championship Road Race in front of Erik Zabel of Germany and Alejandro Valverde of Spain.

Bettini also won the 2007 World Championship Road Race in front of Alexander Kolobnev of Russia and Stefan Schumacher of Germany.

In addition, Bettini won the 2004 Olympic Road Race in front of Sergio Paulinho of Portugal and Axel Merckx of Belgium.

Bettini won the Liege-Bastogne-Liege Classic twice, in 2000 and 2002.

He also won the Tour of Lombardy Classic twice, in 2005 and 2006.

Bettini won the Milan-San Remo Classic in 2003.

Bettini was 2nd in the 2001 World Championship Road Race behind Oscar Freire of Spain.

In addition, Bettini won the Points Jersey in the Giro d'Italia in 2005 and 2006.
