Gastone Nencini was an Italian cyclist who was born in Barberino di Mugello on 1 March 1930. 1952 marked the beginning of his professional cycling career, which lasted until 1960. Nencini was renowned for his climbing abilities and his stage race performance.
1953 was Nencini’s breakthrough year, as he won the Tour of the Apennines and the Giro dell’Appennines. In 1954 and 1957, he was the champion of the Italian national road race championship.
Nencini’s greatest accomplishment was winning the 1957 Tour de France. He won four of the race’s stages and wore the yellow jersey for nine of them. He was the first Italian to win the Tour de France since Gino Bartali in 1948, claiming victory by a margin of 3 minutes and 24 seconds.
In addition to winning the Tour of Switzerland in 1955 and 1957, as well as the Giro d’Italia in 1957, Nencini was also successful in other key competitions.
After retiring from professional cycling in 1960, Nencini worked as the cycling team’s sports director. On February 1, 1980, at the age of 49, he died of cancer.
