Walter Godefroot was born on July 2, 1943.

"Walter Godefroot is the only one of my adversaries who I never beat in a direct fight for victory", said Eddy Merckx.

That statement illustrates the kind of rider that Godefroot was.

The Belgian rider won the Points Jersey in the 1970 Tour de France.

Godefroot won the 1969 Paris-Roubaix Classic in front of Eddy Merckx, and Willy Vekemans of Belgium.

Godefroot was also 2nd in the 1973 Paris-Roubaix Classic behind Merckx.

In addition, Godefroot was 3rd in the 1968 Paris-Roubaix Classic behind Merckx and Belgian Herman Van Springel.

Godefroot won the Tour of Flanders Classic twice, in 1968 and 1978.

He also won the Liege-Bastogne-Liege Classic in 1967.
