Gilberto Simoni was born on August 25, 1971.

The Italian rider was a two-time winner of one of the Grand Tour events.

He also stood on every step of the podium of the event.

Simoni won the 2001 Giro d’Italia in front of Abraham Olano and Unai Osa of Spain.

Simoni also won the 2003 Giro d’Italia in front of Stefano Garzelli of Italy and Yaroslav Popovych of the Ukraine.

Simoni was 2nd in the 2005 Giro behind Paolo Savoldelli of Italy.

Simoni was 3rd in the 1999 Giro d'Italia behind fellow countrymen Ivan Gotti and Paolo Savoldelli.


Simoni was 3rd in the 2000 Giro d'Italia behind fellow countrymen Stefano Garzelli and Francesco Casagrande.

Simoni was 3rd in the 2004 behind Damiano Cunego of Italy and Sergei Honchar of the Ukraine.

Simoni was also 3rd in 2006 behind Ivan Basso of Italy and Jose-Enrique Gutierrez of Spain.

In addition, Simoni won the Points Jersey in the 2003 Giro d'Italia.
