Sylvere Maes was born on August 27, 1909. He died on December 5, 1966.

The Belgian rider twice won the Tour de France.

He also won the Mountains Jersey as well in the event.

In addition, he won the Paris-Roubaix Classic.

Maes won the 1936 Tour de France in front of Antonin Magne of France and Felicien Vervaecke of Belgium.

Maes also won the 1939 Tour de France in front of Rene Vietto of France and Lucien Vlaemynck of Belgium.

In addition, Maes won the Mountains Jersey in the 1939 Tour de France.

Maes won the 1933 Paris-Roubaix in front of Julien Vervaecke of Belgium and Leon LeCalvez of France.

Sylvere was the older brother of fellow 1935 Tour de France winner Romain Maes.
