Ottavio Bottecchia was an Italian professional cyclist who competed in road races. He was born in San Martino di Colle Umberto, Italy, on August 1, 1894, and had a prominent career in the 1920s. Bottecchia was renowned for his climbing abilities and good Tour de France performances.

Bottecchia’s early life was marked by hardship, and at a young age he began working in a factory. Afterwards, he developed an interest in cycling and began competing professionally in 1920. In his rookie season as a professional cyclist, he won the Giro del Piemonte. Bottecchia became the first Italian cyclist to win the Tour de France in 1924 and 1925. In 1924 and 1925, he also won the Giro d’Italia and the Giro di Lombardia.

Bottecchia’s career was cut short in 1927 when he was discovered unconscious on the side of the road with injuries indicating he had been struck by a car. A few days later, he succumbed to his injuries at the age of 32. His death’s circumstances remain unknown and have been the subject of much discussion.

Bottecchia’s reputation as a cyclist is noted for his triumph in the Tour de France and his contribution to cycling’s popularity in Italy. 2013 marked his induction into the Giro d’Italia Hall of Fame.
